We get asked all the time about pots. With a world class selection of brew kettles, the choices can be overwhelming. If you need help making a choice, this comparison chart will be a useful tool. A good rule of thumb is to pick a pot that is double the volume of the desired batch.
Type of Metal
The main difference between SS304 and SS200 series steel is the percentages of metals in the steel. SS304 is stronger and more resistant to corrosion than SS200. We also have a few kettles made of lighter, but weaker, aluminium.
This is the measured maximum amount of fluid that the pot can contain.
This is the measured interior size from the bottom of the pot to the top.
This is the measured interior size from one side of the pot to the other.
The lower the gauge, the thicker the pot walls. Lower gauge equals higher quality.
These are stronger than spot welded as the handles are drilled through the pot walls.
Silicone covered handles provide a comfortable, no-slip grip that protects your hands from the heated handles and help to prevent burns.
These are markings on the inside of the pot to identify each U.S. gallon. They make it easy to measure the amount of liquid in the pot.
Tri-Clad is a layer of alumiunium sandwiched between two layers of stainless steel. It increases the rate of induction heating, and the thicker bottom helps to prevent scorching your beer.
A rolled rim is an indication of strength and the manufacturers attention to detail. The rim is rolled over onto itself instead of just curved over which strengthens the pot.
A 1:1.2 ratio of Width:Height prevents loss of product due to boiling over or vapour loss, as well as causing the water to boil more slowly, preventing scorching of your beer.
A sight gauge is a clear tube, which allows you to view the fluid level in your pot without opening it.
Trub Dams are exclusive to SS Brewtech products. Trub is the layer of sediment that forms at the bottom of the pot during fermenting. A Trub Dam prevents this Trub from being sucked up into your pickup tube.
These have 1/2" male parts welded directly to the pot. This makes it convenient to attach different 1/2" fittings.
The rated value is our impressions of each product. We tried to evaluate this with the mindset of a person on a moderate budget. The lower the rated grade, the less bells and whistles.
Use this metric to judge the overall construction of each product. Better built products will score a better grade. Features that help determine the end result include: grade of steel, features, rolled or flared rim etc.
