Fresh hops are very aromatic and are beautiful to look at; but once you boil them, they turn into a pile of gunk in the wort. Home brewers need to remove the hops prior to fermentation. Clarifying the brew by removing large sediments causes less problem to the fermenter or yeasts. During the fermentation process, the presence of hops may clog and plaster on the side of the container which creates a lot of effort for home brewers to clean up. Moreover, the presence of hops may clog the small pipes especially if home brewers use external chillers.

There are many methods used by home brewers to filter hops and one of the most common method is the use of a mesh strainer. A mesh strainer provides a simple solution in filtering hops but the problem is that it can be very inconvenient to hold the strainer in place while transferring a large volume of wort to another container.

Another method is the use of a Bazooka screen. A Bazooka screen is not only used in filtering hops from the wort but it is also commonly used in mash tuns which is a process that releases the sugar from the grains for better fermentation. It is made from 12 inch 1/2" MPT stainless steel including the mesh screen. This particular tool in filtering hops are notorious for clogging up easily especially when small pellets are used. Homebrewers can prevent this problem by using whole leaf hops.

works like it should, I use this on my BIAB kettle/tun - works well to screen out trub - use a voile hop sock and get clear running's without a clog up.

Works Great In Mash Tun

This was a cost-effective filter for my cooler mash tun. It seems to be more prone to clogging in comparison to others' false bottoms or manifolds, but I have learned to adjust my crush and sparge slower, with good results.I also picked one up for my brew kettle, and in does a decent job at keeping some of trub and hop material out of the carboy, but a fair bit does pass through, and gets clogged up easily with hoppy brews. While draining the kettle, I use a sanitized spoon to clean off the screen every once in a while, and it allows me to get a much better yield from kettle to carboy.

I Can Finally Make Iipas And Not Clog

I have one in my Kettle, it took a bit of getting used too but now works great. I have done a IIPA with a pound of pellets and not clogged this screen. I did clog it the first few times I brewed but I have learned its secrets. When you are chilling allow the hops to fall on its own, don't stir it up, allow the hops to loosely fall to the bottom and make a nice layer on the bottom of the kettle. Once the hops have all dropped to the bottom SLOWLY SLOWLY open the drain valve, just a touch. You only want the smallest slowest run off you can manage for the first minute. The initial runnings will be cloudy with hop material. Wait till the runnings are clear (feel free to vorlauf the cloudy runnings) once the runnings are clear the hop material in the kettle has created its own filter. ever so slowly open the valve little by little. It might take 2-3 minutes before you can have the valve full open, but you will get there and your wort will be crystal clear and you will not clog.

Not So Sure

The screen hold it's shape really well but the clamp binding it with the fitting doesn't seem secure. I have a feeling I will be replacing this part more than I want to. It's a shame as this is a really handy add-on to the boil pot.

Works Good But Clamp Could Be Improved

I bought three of these to make a hop screen in the bottom of my kettle. They work great. The bazooka screen itself is great. it is clamped onto a 1/2 ss close nipple with a crimp type clamp. These don't quite hold it on tight enough and can easily let the screen turn relative to the nipple. One of the three came off and I had to replace with a regular hose clamp. Overall, still a great product, just be gentle with it when installing/removing.

Take It Easy

The mesh is a nice rigid material that hold its shape really well. The clamp that holds the mesh to the threaded adapter is a bit on the weak side so great care must be taken when installing. But once it's in it shouldn't be under a lot of stress so not a huge problem.

Not The Best Choice.

Nice rigid mesh, but the clamp holding onto the nipple is pretty weak. Falls apart easily. Will filter whole hops nicely, but will get clogged easily with pellet hops. Now I use it in conjunction with a paint strainer bag for filtering hops and that seems to be a decent combination. Would get a false bottom next time though.

Perfect Tool!

Bought the 12 for both my stock pot/kettle and for my cooler mash tun. Works great to keep the grains or trub out of the wort, and fits just right. A must have for all your setup.

Works, But Connections A Bit Weak.

A well constructed mesh screen that works well to block whole hop leaves. I haven't mashed with it, and don't plan to, but it should work well enough. Very basic connections, but serviceable.

Bazooka Screen

Put one of these in my mashtun after many stuck sparges. Works great. Grain bed settles down nicely on it, and after a short vourlaf, all is well.
