Burners
Before you can even taste your home-brewed beer, there are many processes involved in creating one. These processes include mashing, lautering, boiling, and fermenting. All of these processes involve the use of heat. For example, the mashing process requires heat while the malted barley is soaked in hot water. Heat is necessary to release the sugar within the barley and also activate the enzymes within the grains.
Having a reliable heat source in your brewing station is very important, and a good burner provides adequate heat and allows homebrewers to have good control of the heat. A slight change in the temperature of the mixture can cause a lot of problems. For instance, using extremely high heat can cause the sugar within the liquid wort to burn. Moreover, high heat may also cause some of the enzymes to denature which affects the final flavour of the beer. (more info below)
