The French Strisselspalt hops are grown from the Alsace which is near Strasbourg, France. It comes from a low-yielding plant with medium-sized cones that are moderately compact. It is one of the hop varieties that are susceptible to diseases, but it is also one of the most in-demand hops in the industry for its aroma. Cultivated for its aromatic qualities that are similar to the Hersbrucker, the French Strisselspalt has some specific aroma descriptors that include citrus, spicy, fruity, herbal and floral.
It contains 1.8 to 2.5% alpha acids and 4% to 4.47% beta acids. It also has a co-humulone content of 20% to 23%. It is therefore used as an aromatic agent in beer. All of these results in a mildly pleasant hoppy flavour which is perfect for a good brew. It is just right for making lager, blonde ale, amber ale, Belgian ale, saison, bock, golden ale, Belgian pale ale and other styles of beer.
It is available in a one-pound package, that is just right for home brewers to create large beer batches. Once you open the package, make sure that you consume all of it within six months. The alpha acid content of the hops tends to dissipate by as much as 30% to 40% after opening and more as time goes by. Storing it in a cool, dark and dry place can also increase its lifespan.
