Stainless Steel or Aluminum Kegs - Is One Better Than the Other?

If you are new to kegging your beer, which should you opt for?

Most experienced homebrewers prefer to use Stainless Steel kegs when storing their beer. The main reason is that Stainless Steel kegs do not oxidize as easily compared to Aluminum kegs. Thus, it is possible to clean Stainless Steel kegs using caustic cleaners. Aluminum kegs, when cleaned with caustic cleaners often discolour, which may influence the final flavour of the beer.

Stainless Steel kegs are also more durable than Aluminum kegs and they can withstand higher force without incurring a lot of damage on the surface, so they tend to last longer than Aluminum kegs. While Aluminum kegs are not as durable as Stainless Steel, they are a better conductor of cold/heat so it is easier to get and keep your beer cold with this particular type of keg. Moreover, Aluminum kegs are also cheaper than Stainless Steel kegs.

While it may seem obvious that Stainless Steel kegs are better than Aluminum kegs, it is not safe to say that one is always better than the other. When choosing between Stainless Steel and Aluminum kegs, you need to make the choice depending on your personal preference. For instance, if you are a homebrewer with a very tight budget, opting for Aluminum kegs is a great way for you to save money and to test the waters of kegging. However, if you are looking for longevity and want a keg that adds a cool factor to your brewing (when money is not an issue), then you can buy Stainless Steel kegs.
