Quieter than bar bundled with starter kit |

I bought this stir bar on a whim that it would rattle less than the stir bar included in the yeast propagation starter kit... and I bought a second because I dumped the first into a fermentor. In comparison to the bar in the starter kit, this bar does not have a ridge down the middle. This reduces the 'rattle' substantially. The reason stir bars often have ridges is to reduce friction (i.e. lower the contact area between the stir bar and the vessel). So while this bar is quieter, it will get thrown easier. This is not really a concern because the speeds this bar can achieve are more than adequate for yeast propagation a 5L flask. It is not necessary to form a vortex to get high yeast reproduction - you just need to keep the yeast in suspension.
