West Coast IPA

The American IPA started out on the West Coast for the access to citrusy, grapefruit, and pine flavoured hops. That was decades ago, and now the style is among the most popular craft beer styles. And for good reason. Amazing bright hops lead to a vast array of juicy hop flavours and bitterness. Also a style served best fresh, and you can't get any fresher than brewing your own!

4 of 5 A Real Sleeper September 4, 2020

I typically prefer a strong, bitter high ABV IPA but really enjoyed this one. It's definitely grapefruit/pine forward, incredibly smooth with very little alcohol flavour. You can enjoy a few of these before the ABV creeps up on you.

I let this sit in the fermenter for 21 days, then bottle conditioned for another 21. I grabbed a sample bottle after 14 but it wasn't quite ready. 21 days was perfect.

5 of 5 Very Tasty October 7, 2015

This was my first all grain kit and I think I screwed up almost every step along the way. Still, in the end it turned out great and is a very tasty beer with a nice citrus taste.

5 of 5 Turned out great March 20, 2015
Reviewer: Terry P from Victoria, BC
I am the same reviewer that posted that the grain bill was not accurate.  Despite adding the extra 1Lb of Victory Malt, this beer turned out excellent.  Has a strong hoppy taste and odor.  For those who have tried Philips Hop Circle, this beer is very similar.  Does have a grapefruit aftertaste along with the bitterness of the hops.  This beer likely is not the best choice as a first homebrew unless the brewer has a love of hoppy brews.

Left in the primary for 14 days, bottled in 1L bottles and let ferment for an additional 14 days.

3 of 5 Grain Bill not Accurate January 27, 2015
Reviewer: Terry P from Victoria, BC
Just received the West Coast IPA kit.  Grain bill did not match the packing list.  The Grain Bill posted includes 1lb of Victory Malt, where the packing list shipped didn't include.  No answer when I called OBK and I had my mash started before I found I was short.  Dashed out to a local supplier and purchased 1lb of Victory and added it to my mash -- then heard back from OBK that it's not required.  I am sure it will taste fine, but unfortunate error that has not been corrected online yet.
