Why make a yeast starter?
Yeast starters ensures healthy yeast. By creating a yeast starter 1-3 days in advance of your brew day, you ensure that your yeast is healthy and strong enough to do its job. Secondly, the starter creates more yeast. This increase of the cell count will give you a better chance of keeping bacteria's and wild yeasts from fermenting in your wort. If you are planning to brew a high gravity beer (1.060+) you will need more yeast to start the fermentation faster. High gravity beers will also have a better chance of completing fermentation with ample quantities of yeast (less chance of stalling out).

3 of 5 Good stir plate, but the motors burn out. September 18, 2017

Both mine and my friend's stir plate motor died less than 6 months after purchasing.  Do yourself a favor and have a spare on hand!  $4 CDN shipped, link below.

5 of 5 Great Addition October 2, 2015

Purchased this a while back and finally got around to using it.  Made the starter the night before, and had the most active fermentation I've ever had.  Tasted when I kegged, and it helped produce the cleanest tasting batch I've made to date.  Very happy to add this to the process.  Now I need a bigger fermenter though due to how active it is.

4 of 5 Good Stir Plate. Some thoughts to consider August 11, 2015
Reviewer: Cody from St. Catharines
First of all the machine itself works very well and I am very happy with its performance on my 1000mL flask.

I bought this with the intention of overbuilding my starers to harvest my yeasts more efficiently. If you are looking for the 5000mL flask you will want to also purchase a 2" stir stick as the 1" one in this kit will struggle/not be able to keep the yeast suspended. As a result of this your flask will vibrate on the stir pad. I lost a overbuilt starter because my flask vibrated off the stir plate and smashed. I have not experienced this when using the 1000ml flask at all, and assume the 2000 ml one would also be fine. I feel that the 2" stir stick would have prevented this this issue as the machine does not vibrate to the same extent as when the stir stick is struggling to spin. Just be cautious.

5 of 5 Fantastic Kit October 8, 2014

Great price. Works really well and is really helpful. I tried making one with a CPU fan, but it wasn't worth the hassle. The motor runs quite and the base unit stores well.

I was looking into building my own stir plate, but I am so glad that I just ended up buying this complete kit. It's a very reasonable price and it's totally worth it to avoid the hassle or risk of it not working.
