Hops are mainly used to provide a unique aroma, flavour and bitterness to the beer. There are different types of varieties of hops used by home brewers. The Citra hop was developed by the Hop Breeding Company in 2007. It was crossed from four excellent hops varieties like the US Tettnang, Hallertau Mittelfruh, East Kent Golding and Brewer's Gold.

It is a new breed of American hops that is valued for its high Alpha Acids and total oil content. It contains 11% to 15% of total Alpha Acids and 3% to 4.5% Beta Acids thus a low cohumulone value at 20% to 24%. Due to its low cohumulone value, the US Citra hops provide a subtle bitter taste to the finished product.

Another attractive characteristic of the US Citra hops is that it is tolerant to mildew. It also has a good pickability due to its dense and medium-sized cones. This particular type of hop pellets produces both fruity and citrus flavour and aroma. The fruity taste is reminiscent of tropical fruits like mango, grapefruit, passion fruit, lychee and guava. It is typically used in making American ales, pale ales, DIPAs and IPAs. It is also used in making Belgian ales, strong Americans and other types of Barley wines.

To ensure the viability of the hops and alpha acid, store the hop pellets in a cool, dark and dry place. This will make the US Citra hop pellets last for a longer time.
